Extending Mental Health for Holistic Student Support in Rural Communities

Coping with isolation, trauma, and uninvited change were the themes in mental health support for students during and after the pandemic. Have student mental health needs changed since the pandemic and a “return to normalcy”? Or have those needs been neglected under the pretense of accepting a “new normal”? Are these needs different in rural vs. urban communities?

A recent publication reported that suicide rates in rural communities are nearly twice as great as those in urban communities. During this webinar, we’ll talk to Kate Wolfe-Lyga from BetterMynd, Upswing’s mental health provider and partner as we discuss what mental health for holistic student support looks like today, on and off campuses in rural communities. Kate will share her insights on what BetterMynd’s mental health counselors are reporting from working with students all over the country.

Navigating Intersecting Identities to Overcome Barriers to Student Success

These intersecting identities often create unique challenges that can hinder academic achievement in the absence of tailored support resources. Throughout this webinar, we will explore the various barriers that students encounter as well as the importance of recognizing and addressing these barriers to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. Teresa Caballero-Meehan, MPA, Academic Success Center Evening Coordinator of Richmond Community College, will join us to discuss her experience working with various student identities and the resources she finds to be most effective at reaching students on her campus.
